My main interests in research are questions concerning animal development in the light of evolution. One way to address issues of how developmental characters have been transformed during evolution is comparative developmental biology that provides the background of my studies. Fascination with the vast variety of arthropod development finally brought me to the Crustacea, which are not only highly diverse in their adult morphology, but also reflect this diversity in developmental aspects. I’m especially interested in early cell division patterns, cell lineages, and germ layer formation processes. The overall aim of my studies is to contribute to our knowledge of how germ layer specification is realized in various arthropods other than in ‘model organisms’.
